Well, it's the end of the year
as I start to write this1,
and on finishing,
in the new year, in a new century, in a new millennium,
I note that the world is still here2,

1 Well. . . not really. Just past 6PM, on December 31st, 1999, a version of this web page was stored on the service provider's UNIX box using Apache. They set their clock to GMT; when files are uploaded, the date and time on the server version is 6 hours later. 2 See september_9_1999 for an earlier, and similar, conclusion. 3 To say, however, that nothing happened just past 6PM is misleading. The file, time stamped locally as 6:15P 12/31/99, stored on the server with a reported time stamp of 0:15A 1/1/1999. By the time this file was stored on the server, the server had self corrected the test version, which now reports year 2000. |
